Just past 'Lot & de Walvis', while I was cycling up 'the Grote Havenbrug' on my newly completely polished bicycle, my left crank hit the ground with a huge noise and the bracket shot off the other side like a rocket with a whistling sound. into the air. I myself then shot 'with my manhood and all' in an uncontrollable jerk at the bar of my bicycle and from there made desperate attempts not to fall and then end up in the always very busy traffic on the street. I don't know how, but I managed to stay upright. A bit sad and disappointed, I looked around at all the traffic coming towards me, a polished bicycle wrongly carries the illusion that everything functions like new again, that was my first thought. After I understood what had happened to me and saw that the left pedal including the crank was 10 meters back in the middle of the street, I moved a bit unsteadily on my feet but headed back home. After covering the first 100 meters, I decided to 'moor' at Lot & de Walvis to collect my thoughts again. Until then I had only seen that place in passing and long ago decided for myself that it was not the right place for me. However, I had been on my way into town for a cup of coffee and a snack and still had to walk miles back home, so I parked my bike there and locked it. I remember thinking that with only 1 pedal it was more automatic than really necessary and then I went to see 'Lotte'. At the reception things immediately went completely wrong... Hello, I'm Niehland, I'm just cycling onto the bridge here and... 'Sir, I don't have time for that right now', 'My colleague will be with you shortly'... Well, I thought, there is clearly money to be made here and everything else is secondary to that. One by one, more and more guests trickled in, real Dutch people who had dinner together, allowed themselves to be directed to a table, where they camped together in isolation for an hour or two and then went home again. Because that's what a restaurant in the Netherlands is for, after all, I saw everyone thinking. 'Reserve, check and isolate', because at Lotte you pay for conviviality at the edge of your table without any further obligation. And even substantial, a black coffee in a not very clean glass for 3.25... Yes, 'the waiter at my reception' understood that correctly, people don't whine or talk, please don't, and of course no story at all about a perilous cycling adventure. If only I were back in Spain, it crossed my mind, how different everything is there. I finished my last bite, got up and left the place without greeting anyone. I didn't want to disturb the waiter any further. The simple final conclusion: if you have a flat tire or something, great tent, but otherwise I advise you to take a walk around the block first.
