Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Order type: Dine in Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: MAD 50–100

If you want to relax over a drink, the Café Colon on Rue de la Kasbah at the edge of the Medina is a pleasant place to do so. I prefer to sit outside in the fresh air under an awning or in the sunshine, facing the historic restored Cine Alcazar, which is now open and showing films. This café has been in the same place for many years. In 1998, it was used as a set in the Bernardo Bertolucci film version of writer and composer Paul Bowles' famous first novel, The Sheltering Sky. I remember watching the film and seeing John Malcovich and Debra Winger walking into this place, and seeing Paul Bowles himself making a cameo appearance at the beginning and ending of the film. The film crew had transformed this area of the Medina and put in street cars. Some years after the film, the café was remodeled into an antique business, but it closed after a few years. The large space was then reconverted back to the original Café Colon, but the dark wood paneling and mirrors were removed and the interior today is quite simple. It can be a bit noisy inside with the televisions on, and in my view, it is much more pleasant to sit outside under the awning, watching the passersby. Tourists often sit outside here, particularly those visiting from Spain and elsewhere, since the Café Colon is the first large cafe on the Rue de la Kasbah. Café Colon has strong working WiFi (just ask the waiter for the code). The service can be a bit erratic, but once served you will enjoy having a break here, especially after a walk down the steep road from the Marshan or the Kasbah. On August 12, 2017. I decided to return to this café and sat outside. I immediately walked inside to summon a waiter to bring me a coffee. I asked for a certain coffee, but the waiter brought me a tall rather than small glass with far too much milk and a bottle of warm water. When I gave the waiter a 100 DH bill, he gave me 85 Dirhams back and I told him no, 10 Dirhams for the coffee and gave him the water back since I did not ask for it. This is a known gimmick at some cafés, as in the past there would be two prices, one price for the Moroccans and the higher price for tourists. I got my 90 dirhams change, and although the coffee was not precisely what I asked for, I still like this café. And I was able to say "Hello" to some tourists visiting for two days from New Jersey. On yet another post-pandemic visit in late-June 2022, I sat outside where you can watch people and catch a cool breeze. I ordered a Lipton tea with slice of lemon. After almost 10 minutes of waiting, I summoned the waiter who spoke in a language I do not understand. When the tea arrived, half of the tall glass was filled with mint leaves, and there was no citron or lemon. I pointed this out to him, since I wanted only Lipton tea, not mixed with mint. After my first sip, I noted that several teaspoons of sugar had already been added. At least I also got a courtesy bottle of mineral water, for a total of 13 Dirhams. I must mention that on a visit in July 2024, I sat outside and ordered a Lipton tea with lemon slices. A young waiter brought it in a tall glass and also a bottle of water. I immediately paid him with a 20 DH bill, and he gave me my change. When I had finished and walked away, he came running after me and claimed I had not paid. Then he grabbed my shirt and I repeated that I had paid for the tea, water and even gave him a 2 DH tip. Most unpleasant and rude, this waiter yelled "F..ck you!" This is totally unacceptable and I don't know if I will ever return to the Café Colon. This waiter should be fired. Meal type: Other Price per person: MAD 1–50 Food: 1 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 3
