On via Santo Stafano there is a new place, way cool and near the pinnacle of high quality apero. “Contrasto” at via S. Stefano 140/a represents the essence of a good life in Bologna: avant garde mixology and aperitivi with a quiet neighborhood vibe. Simone backing Beatrice at the bar (photo), chef Eva assembling aperitivi unlike any you’d find in the city (each a masterpiece), in front of a bar that can handle almost anything the customer might desire to drink (photo). The menu is very high quality (photo), headed by a dish entitled, “Fai tu”, which places you in the gentle hands and at the whim of chef Eva for her inspired creation. (I ordered two of these one evening, and they differed in every way from each other.) The customary clients -- including the beloved puppy “Gina” (photos) -- coexist wonderfully with the casual visitors. Four or five sidewalk tables complement inside seating which will be welcome when the weather turns colder. The menu is, as noted, cordon bleu to this modest customer, and offers everything from vegetarian to heavier meat-leaden servings (and a surprising seafood touch). The beer drinker or wine/prosecco drinker will be rewarded by the modest but very interesting offering. While not as cheap as places in Centro storico, your walk out to Santo Stefano 140 will be rewarded with a memorable evening and perhaps some new friends. If you are English speaking, you will be very comfortable with the wonderful staff.
