Tonight may have been the best culinary night I've ever had in Italy. Certainly in Torino (Although 2 nights ago may have been my best culinary experience in the whole of Europe at a Galician tavern in Madrid at Casa Maceiras with my aunt and cousin). But four trips into Torino, hours of culinary research in, and not even a whisper about this place, L'Angolo Di Parin. Founded in 1885 two blocks from our place, we had walked by it in the past, but were too intimidated by its appearance - fearing it might be too fancy, snotty or expensive. It was none of those. Surprisingly, it was fairly casual, a bit boisterous and packed full of shabby art nouveau-ish whimsy. But the food? There's absolutely nothing casual or shabby about it. My starter is a dish I've wanted to try since October when I came with Joe and Kathy, but both were too chicken-shy to try it and it required too long a trek:. Peperoni con Bagna Caoda Alla Parin (Parin’s way sweet and sour bell peppers with a very intense traditional sauce made of crushed Anchovies, Oil and Garlic) The straight up anchovies were phenomenal and admittedly, probably not for everyone. But paired with the bite of crunchy fresh sweet pepper, I couldn't help but break into laughter from the unexpected twist the two flavor profiles tricked on the tongue. My entree, the stuffed Agnolotti (similar to tortellini) is a dish, as the one above, native to this region of Piedmonte. But tonight's slow cooked in a thick, brown, and savory meat sauce and spiked with just the right amount of rosemary was unlike anything I've had. However, the biggest surprise of the night was Joe's slow-cooked Pork Shank in a nibolo wine reduction (which I'm normally not a big fan of), presented in a way that was out of a, well... like it was out of a can of Deviled Ham Spread. To hell with the bone-in and char-appeal tradition. These three little pigs bore the texture and color of beef tartar, but with the punch and boldness of a fatty pork belly. The pigs lay on a blanket of mashed potatoes so silky, I could have crawled in the dish and tucked myself to sleep in them. Yea, that. The lot, two appetizers, two entrees, with a *full* glass of fine Piedmontese wine, basket of fresh Torino bread, mason jar full of enough breadsticks to start flour-fueled armada, and table bottle of aqua-bella for €29 each. And we don't even have to cross the street into the historic district. Mr. Parin just became the only neighbor of mine I will ever visit on a regular basis. Prego, and bravo, signore.
