I used to pay only short visits to Te & Kaffi Hlemmur: located in a noisy, impersonal, crowded food hall and with a lack of seating space, I found it suitable for grabbing a good coffee to go before my bus came to the station, but never attractive as a hang-out spot in its own right. That has changed.
When I visited Te & Kaffi Hlemmur on a gray and rainy Sunday on October 20, the warmth of my perfectly steamed oat latte was accompanied by elegant jazz music, softly and subtly filling the air, matching the international atmosphere at the food hall, and, to my surprise, coming from the cheerful barista's phone. The mood was good -elevated by the evidently pleased customers, all of which had been served by the very welcoming employee, who chatted friendly (in English, Icelandic, Arabic) while not losing a beat from steaming their latte drinks. He came around the bar every time to look at the pastries and sandwiches from the guest's point of view and help them choose. I'd never seen anyone do this before -but apparently it worked, because no one seemed to leave empty-handed. A jittering lady came asking for some caffeine-free, chamomile tea to help her relax -lacking chamomile, he offered her the Heilsubot herbal tea. Spot-on. The place was so transformed with cordial chatter and elegant notes alongside the cosy smell of toasted bread, it wasn't a quick grab-a-coffee-to-go impersonal spot any more, and I stayed.
I came back last Saturday, got served by the same person, and the mood was the same: warm, cosy, cheerful, with perfectly steamed lattes and a barista that made the trip to the guests' point of view to help them choose pastries -and feel at home. If this is to be expected as the consistent status of Te & Kaffi Hlemmur from now on, then Te & Kaffi Hlemmur is obviously the place to go (please bring the vegan blueberry muffins back, though)!
